Cyber Insurance…Your Last Line of Defense
Over the past 12 months, we have been going in-depth about the different ways you need to protect your organization from the multitude of cyber threats. The last of the defenses that you should have in place for your organization is Cyber Insurance.
You probably have two questions. 1) What is Cyber Insurance? 2) Why would I need it? You may not know this, but your regular business liability insurance does not cover cyber incidents. Cyber insurance generally covers your business' liability for a data breach involving sensitive customer information, such as Social Security numbers, credit card numbers, account numbers, driver's license numbers and health records.
When you have a data breach, you will need to rely on cyber insurance to cover the costs. But what are the costs? It will cover legal fees, notifying customers about the breach, restoring personal identities of affected customers, recovering compromised data, and repairing damaged computer systems.
When I talk to business owners, many of them think that they are already protected and don’t need additional insurance. Once I start discussing the implications of not having it, a light bulb goes off and they see the light. Cyber insurance is not that expensive and well worth the investment.
