Why Traditional Anti-virus Doesn’t Work Anymore

The title of this post may surprise you a bit. But it is true. The anti-virus software we have been utilizing for the past 20 years or so just does not meet the requirements of today’s threats because of how easy it is to create a new threat.

Not sure how many of you will remember this, but prior to the credit card machines that you see today, they used to manually swipe your credit card. They would place it into a device, lay a form over the top, and move the bar over the top of the paper and card, creating a carbon copy. Afterwards, they used a book to look up your credit card number to see if your card was stolen or not.

Believe it or not, that is the exact same way that your anti-virus software works. When your computer opens up a file, the anti-virus software looks at the file, and then looks it up in its own little database to see if it’s listed or not (this is why your anti-virus software can slow down your computer). One problem is that it needs to look up each file, and hopefully, it is located in the database. Another problem with this type of methodology is that an existing virus can be changed in about 5 seconds so that it will not show up in that database (until it is put in days or weeks later).

But there is a solution, Next-Generation Endpoint Protection Software. This type of software is behavioral-based detection and uses intelligent automation to stop the most advanced malware, exploits, and insider attacks (including ransomware).

Behavioral-based detection uses sophisticated machine learning to predict threats based upon what is known normal behavior versus abnormal behavior (for example, seeing if data is going to multiple foreign countries when normally the user is not interacting with those countries).
